Finally, The Shop of Modern Southerner has arrived! This shop is dedicated to two former businesses, Replay Consignments and ELEVEN26. Replay was my first attempt at having an online shop, and it began in my old college house on 7th Street in Hattiesburg, MS. Replay focused on second-hand items, mostly from my closet (I've always had a lot of clothes- love a bargain), and was comprised of clothes, shoes, accessories, and a few small decor items. It was a mess, it wasn't thought out, and it was basically an experiment. I learned a lot from Replay, and once I saw it wasn't work I morphed it into an antique shop, ELEVEN26. ELEVEN26 lasted a little over a year and featured antique, vintage, and mid-century modern items, everything from kitchen utensils and gadgets, to vintage jewelry, and mid-century modern decor. Although the site was doing alright, it too was an experiment, and an expensive one at that. I decided to close the doors and figure out something that worked well for me.
Back in December 2013, I decided to redesign Modern Southerner, and that's when I decided to integrate the blog and the shop. I figured why not use the reading power of the blog to promote a new shop! This time the shop is focusing on hand-made purposeful jewelry and a few antiques. Right now you can experience the ELEVEN26 collection which is designed by Sarah McMahon (me), and features purposeful metaphysical jewelry that can enrich and enhance your life, while being stylish and contemporary. Soon we will be adding some of the vintage jewelry and decor items previously on ELEVEN26's site. Pieces will also be added to the ELEVEN26 collection, and all pieces in the collection are one-of-a-kind designs so be sure to grab what resonates with you!
I've learned a lot with these endeavors, so here's a little bit of advice. Never give up on your dreams, and failure is a sign you're learning, so (I repeat) never give up! Sure, I had two former businesses that failed, but I learned a lot, and I don't even think about the profits or losses, and I don't dwell on what didn't work. I do, however, extract the good, adjust the game plan, and go at it another angle.
One of my favorite quotes, although I'm totally Team Tesla, is from Edison.
“Many of life's failures are men who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
So, welcome to the newest adventure at Modern Southerner! Inventory will be changing often, so be sure to check back!
