While Stumbling today I came across Elle Magazine's Museum Pieces, Our favorite looks from the 2011 Met Gala red carpet. I'm hoping that favorite has a double meaning because a lot of these are TERRIBLE. Now, I know I'm going to get some hate comments from this, but you know what, I don't mind. People disagreeing are people paying attention, and any attention is good attention, right? Ok, maybe not, but this is my blog and my opinion and I own it. Plus, I like comments, just don't be hateful for the sake of being hateful.
Now, let me explain my stance on these here dresses (and brace yourself, there's 65 of them, and I know "these here" isn't correct, but it's funny). I fully believe in extreme fashion... on the runway. Some things are just down right ridiculous looking and should literally be in a museum (which I get the dress "outrageous for the Met Gala" thing) or on stage, not on red carpets or any other function where cameras are present. I do like some of these, and I will point the ones I like out as well as the ones I think look like the designers were drunk. Sorry, I don't care who they are or what amazing things they've done, some of these are down right moronic. Oh, harsh! Sorry.
And here we go...
I love this Alexander McQueen gown worn by Gisele. It's simple, yet beautiful. When I first came across this collection of photos I thought "Oh, how pretty! I'm going to look." I even added this picture to my Pinterest. Then things got interesting.
I think Emma Stone's custom Lanvin dress is nice, and I think she looks very nice.
Miranda Kerr's Marchesa um, dress(?) is disgusting. And her shoes look like an attempt at the sneaker heel thing which never has nor will it ever work. I mean seriously, wtf is this? It looks to me that they ran out of ideas and just randomly threw some lining on the outside of the dress.
Kristen Stewart wears a custom Proenza Schouler dress. Custom... I'm sorry, this is pretty terrible. Her makeup looks good. The dress, not so much.
I have mixed feelings about Brooklyn Decker's Michael Kors gown. At first I thought "Wtf?" Then I looked at it a second time, and sort of liked it. She has the body to pull it off, and why do we have to show ridiculous amounts of skin all the time anyway? I think this was a bold choice, yet it works for me.
Ashley Olsen in vintage Christian Dior Haute Couture. The sleeves kill me. I do like that it's vintage, but she's short and I don't think this helps that. I think just the black part would look great.
Mary-Kate Olsen in vintage Givenchy Couture. I don't hate it, but I don't think it works for a red carpet event. More of something I'd see wearing on a fall afternoon.
Dakota Fanning wore a Valentino gown, and I think it's age appropriate, but I think it washes her out a bit. Overall I don't hate it though.
Karl Lagerfel wears a Tom Ford suit. No comment. Blake Lively wears Chanel Haute Couture and I don't love it. I like the color and I like the draping portion, but as for the lace top portion. No thanks.
Mia Wasikowska wore a custom Thakoon gown. Don't love it, but I certainly don't hate it. It's way better than most of this stuff.
Diane Kruger wore a Jason Wu gown, and I like it. I'm not wild about Joshua Jackson's suit. I feel like the cream pipping cuts him off and makes him look dumpy. I suggest all black.
Jennifer Hudson looks AMAZING in her Vera Wang gown. I love this dress, and I think it really compliments her skin. She simply looks wonderful, and I'm happy for her!
Emma Roberts looks great in her Michael Kors gown, too. Again, I think it's age appropriate, and I just really like it. I think it's funny that some of the younger celebrities dress better than the older ones. Maybe they've just lost it a bit...
Can't say I'm wild about Jennifer Lopez's Gucci number. It's a bit too Vegas looking for me. Plus I don't like the color or the feathery top portion or her hair for that matter. Sorry J. Lo.
This definitely isn't the worst, but Shalom Harlow's Marchesa gown is a bit much. I looks like a short dress paired with the lining of an evening gown. Just not for me at all.
Penelope Cruz in an Oscar de la Renta gown. I like it. She looks nice. I don't like the old lady ruffle at the top, but other than that she looks good.
Beyonce in her ridiculous Emilio Pucci gown. I reminds me of something that a crazy Barbie would wear, and if Barbie were a person she couldn't walk. Looks like Beyonce couldn't walk in this either. Sorry, it's disgusting.
Michelle Williams wears a custom Miu Miu gown. So, does that mean she requested the birds (click on it and look at it bigger, pretty goofy)? I like the cut of the dress, but the birds look like something she bought a Michael's and glued on. I definitely think they're an afterthought and it shows.
Jessica Alba in a Ralph Lauren Collection gown. I'm assuming she's pregnant? I don't know, don't keep up with that stuff, but she looks great. I really like this dress and it's way better than Kate Hudson's (it's coming, keep scrolling) pregnant choice.
Gah, Riannah, c'mon! Rihanna is a beautiful girl, but in this Stella McCartney gown with her hair in weird braids, she looks awful. She looks like an awkward goth girl going to her prom. I really dislike this look on her. She's so pretty, what the hell!?
Ciara's Prabal Gurung gown is BEAUTIFUL. I think this is my favorite out of all of them. I don't care for the chunky bracelet, I think a more simple bracelet would have worked better, but this dress, I LOVE IT. She looks great!
For some reason, Kanye West in a custom Tory Burch tuxedo, was thrown in there. I mean I like a more classic tux, but he looks nice. Not wild about the straight leg tux pants, but to each their own.
I love that this follows the jewelry-less Doutzen Kroes. I have no idea who Margherita Maccapani Missoni is, but I know I don't like her Missoni (Did she make it? I don't know.) gown, and the jewelry, geez you're killing me! Copper and gold? Earrings, a necklace, and a bracelet on each arm? Not to mention that from a designers point of view bright copper and gold with pastels just doesn't look good. Blah, don't like it!
Um, what? Janelle Monae looks like she should be a ringleader in this Chanel blouse, pants, and clutch. And satin? Really? C'mon! I really really don't like this look at all. If she did it to stand out, good job, but otherwise she just looks silly.
It's like Taylor Swift, Ashley Greene just looks good in this Donna Karan Collection gown. She's well put together, the dress is pretty, and it just works for me. When in doubt, go classic. You can't go wrong and you'll look beautiful.
Nicole Richie wears a vintage gown. I like her hair...
I get that Kate Hudson is all bohemian and stuff, but this Stella McCartney gown does nothing for her pregnant body. Silk is not the way to go when you're about to burst with child. Also, that thing on the top of her head, not working for me.
Oh Selma, you bitch. Salma Hayek looks beautiful in this Alexander McQueen couture gown. Doesn't she always look great? Ugh, some people! (I kid, I like her).
Freida Pinto wears a Chanel Haute Couture gown... Nice try, but this is horrible. The menswear dress look never ever ever works.
Naomi Campbell in an Alexander McQueen couture gown. Geez Naomi, after all these years in fashion you'd think you'd learn something. This is terrible, like throwing a cell phone at an employee! ZING!
Gwyneth Paltrow wears this Stella McCartney gown well! She just looks really nice.
Alicia Keys in a Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci gown. Another pretty girl in an awful dress. I don't think I'd mind it sans croc jacket.
Zoe Saldana wears a Calvin Klein Collection gown. This is super plain and kind of boring, but you know what? I like plain and boring over ridiculous and gaudy.
Dianna Agron wears a Michael Kors gown. She looks nice, I'm digging the neckline.
Liv Tyler in a Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci gown. Looks like Riccardo sacrificed Big Bird for this one, but it's alright, well not for Big Bird, but the dress is alright.
Joan Smalls in a Tom Ford gown that doesn't leave much to the imagination, and the long sleeves aren't hiding that. NEXT.
Crystal Renn in a Zac Posen gown. Can't go wrong with black, right? WRONG. I don't even know where to start, but I do know it looks like someone read the wrong invitation. The Gothic Ball is next weekend. Assistant FIRED!
Rosie Huntington Whiteley wears a custom Burberry gown. Looks like a modified 70s nightgown. And once again, satin is gross.
Alexa Chung in a Christopher Kane dress. She looks like a crazy person. I'm digging the retro looking lady behind her though.
Anna Della Russo in an Alexander McQueen, um, outfit. I take the previous comment back, she looks like a crazy person. I, I mean, I just, I, um, I can't form words for this! Did an ostridge lay an egg on her head? OMG, it's just so disgusting!!!
Isabel Lucas in a Louis Vuitton gown. I actually don't mind the gown, but what the hell is going on with her head? Or in her head for that matter? Weird choice.
Chanel Iman in a Dolce & Gabbana dress. It looks more like a Sunday brunch dress to me, but I like it. She looks nice and kind of retro.
Daphne Guinness wears an Alexander McQueen dress. A lot of birds had to die for this dress, and that's sad because it doesn't even look good. Also, looks like she put her eyeliner on in the dark. Just saying. I also really like the sad looking lady behind her. My theory? She really loves birds. :*(
Lucy Liu wears a Vionnet dress, and it's horrible.
Jessica Chastain in an Emilio Pucci dress. I have no idea who she is or the dufus standing next to her, but I do know they can't dress.
Elettra Wiedemann in her grandmother Ingrid Bergman's dress, reworked by Prabal Gurung. It's cool it has history and all, but it looks like a slutty Halloween toga. I don't care for it.
Jessica Stam in a Tommy Hilfiger dress. It's cute, but a little too ballerina for me.
Naomi Watts in a Stella McCartney gown. I'd like it more sans sleeves, but it's not bad.
Amy Poehler in a J. Mendel dress. I love Amy Poehler, and she looks nice.
Karolina Kurkova in a Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture dress. Yep, those are pants. Lace pants.
Florence Welch in a Yves Saint Laurent dress. It's kind of 70s, and I kind of like that.
Michelle Alves wears an Abed Mahfouz gown. Too much lace for my taste (ha, you like that), but she looks nice. I'm more interested in seeing the front of the dress behind her.
Ok, I'm done hating. These are all just my opinion which I'm entitled to, just as you are. So, hopefully you laughed a little... if not, oh well. Enjoy!
